The skin varies in thickness from very thin areas that cover the eyelids to thicker areas such as the soles of the feet that have constant wear and tear.

Two primary structures make up the layers of the skin. The outer layer is referred to as the epidermis and the underlying layer is the dermis. A small, fingernail size patch of skin would contain approximately 5 million cells, over 100 sweat glands and hairs, 1000 sensors for touch, approximately 3 1/2 feet of microscopic blood vessels and 1 1/2 feet of nerve fibers.
